The Plough Petition

The Plough Petition
I will be going to the Starry Plough on Monday evening to talk with the owners (Eileen and/or Francis) and John about John's recent behavior.
I intend to inform them of the situation as best I can, and request that John apologize to those he directly offended or simply walk away from the Starry Plough for awhile.
Personally, I have no interest in returning to the Starry Plough to dance after what has happened if he does not agree to either of the above requests. This saddens me more than I can say. I have been coming to the Starry Plough to dance on Monday nights since Teddi Banks first brought me in 1998. Thank you Teddi. I've been regarded as a "regular" ever since (not counting the 3 years I lived in LA).
If you've danced or played at the Starry Plough, yet have no idea what I'm talking about, please see these two LiveJournal posts, made by Ammy & Rachel, respectively. Each of them have been going to the Starry Plough for well over 10 years.
http://syndicated.livejournal.com/ammy_fury/228887.html
http://miss-mimsy.livejournal.com/722772.html

This is cross-posted on my LiveJournal (http://edge-of-within.livejournal.com), the Plough People Tribe, and the Starry Plough mailing list.
I strongly encourage you to pass on this information, and link back to any of the above sources, since I'm sure I'm not reaching everyone who goes or has gone to the Starry Plough.

If you have danced or played at the Starry Plough on Monday nights, and would like to show your support AGAINST John's actions last Monday at the Starry Plough, please Reply to this post with your name.
If you would like, you can include the dates you came to Plough, and your reason for leaving (if any), though it's not necessary.
If you are leaving or have left the Plough because of John Slaymaker, please indicate as much if you are comfortable doing so.
It is totally fine to sign the petition if you strongly disagree with John's actions, yet still want to attend Monday nights at the Plough. No one will hold that against you, and signing the petition will not be held against you by anyone at the Starry Plough.
Please do not use this post for any conversations on the topic. You can join the conversations already present in the above LJ posts, or email/message me privately.

I will collect all the replies from the Tribe, mailing list, and my LJ and bring them with me on Monday.
If you would like to come with me on Monday, please include it in your reply.
There is no possible way I will be banned from the Plough for voicing my concern, and there is no possible way you will be banned from the Plough for "signing" this petition.

Thank you for your help and your time,
Sam Simmons

Inside joke for anyone that was there last night <3!

The cutest boy (the cutest boy)
I ever saw (I ever saw)
Was sippin' ci- (was sippin' ci-)
Der through a straw (der through a straw)
The cutest boy I ever saw
Was sippin' cider through a straw

/ G - / / D - / G - / - - C - / D - G - /

I said to him, "What ya doin' that fer"
A sippin' cider through a straw"...

First cheek to cheek, then jaw to jaw
We both sipped cider through a straw...

And now and then, that straw would slip
And we'd sip cider lip to lip...

That's how I got my mother in law
By sippin' cider through a straw...

Now fourteen kids, all call me Ma
From sippin' cider through a straw...

The moral of this sad, sad, joke
Is don't sip cider, sip a Coke...

Ceili lessons

Hello,
I've been watching what are, I think, Ceili set dances at Friday Night Waltz with admiration and a tinge of envy. I enjoy set dancing and this looks like fun, so I'd like to learn. I currently live in the South Bay (Mountain View). I've run across a few postings on the web about Ceili in the South Bay, but nothing looks current. So, a few questions...

Is there any regular venue for Ceili in the SB (or any at all)?
Mondays look like the best night at Starry Plough. Are there lessons there any other time?
Does anyone regularly travel to SP from the SB (fun with acronyms!)? How do you get there (drive, public transit, a mix)? How long does it take? If people drive, does anyone have interest in carpooling?

As a side note, some of you may recognize me from FNW and now a couple of PEERS events. I'm a bit shy in a big crowd where I don't know anyone, but I really enjoy going. I'm looking forward to getting to know more people. So if you run into me and I'm quiet, it's most likely a combination of being shy and being unsure of dance etiquette. Any help in breaking the ice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hod

For those coming from outside Berkeley, especially the South Bay. If you didn't already know, part of the MacArthur Maze collapsed. Take a little time to make sure it doesn't impact your ride up here for dancing.

St. Patrick's Day Ceili in Downtown Oakland This Friday!

Driving with Fergus (members of the Plough house band) are playing their annual St. Patrick's Day gig in downtown Oakland.
It's a fun band and they're excited to have us dancers come liven things up for the lunchtime crowd.
In the past we've always had enough dancers show up for both 8 and 4 hand dances. Who's in?

March 16
12noon-1pm
Oakland City Center Plaza
(Look for the courtyard in the center of the city block)
500 12th St.

There's really nothing better than the silliness and fun of dancing your heart out for a crowd of folks during lunchtime, then going back to work afterwards.

Message from Patrick

This was sent to me by Patrick; I've posted it to the Starry Plough email list.

********************

Last night we instituted a new policy regarding sketchy behavior at the Plough. This is an attempt to stop behavior that's caused several people to stop coming to Plough. We were told this was Scott's policy at FNW,

One complaint - you're let know there's a problem.

Second complaint - you're asked to leave for six months

Third complaint - please leave and find somewhere else to dance. You are no longer welcome here.

Ladies, please let the gents know if they're doing something of which you don't approve. If he comes forward to kiss, and you don't want to, just mouth the word no. He should stop.

If you're wondering what constitutes sketchy behavior, please check out this link:

http://dance.stanford.edu/syllabi/sketchy.htm

Tom Hill teaches an introductory waltz class from 7 to 9 pm in the downstairs room. To get the most from this class, try to start at 7pm. Excellent first time class.

hey, all,
a while back, my old roommate (who many of you know...magenta) joined an irish band. little did i know that an old friend of mine from college was the bassist! (small world, yeah). anyway, i've seen them play for the south bay ceili, and now they're playing a show at printers inc in palo alto this saturday. i know it's also peers, but i thought i'd post this anyway.

tracey

>Welcome to the Dreams Underfoot mailing list! We'll be using this list
>to keep you updated on upcoming gig dates (and hopefully a CD release
>one of these decades).
>
>Our next performance will be this coming Saturday, April 2, at
>Printer's Cafe, 320 California Ave in Palo Alto. Show starts at 8PM.
>
>We're absolutely overjoyed to be introducing two new members of the
>band at this show; Frank, our new percussionist, and Janelle, who
>plays whistle, harmonica, and a whole host of other wacky instruments.
>Frank and Janelle have added a lot of depth to our sound, so we're
>looking forward to wowing you with all-new arrangements.
>
>Hope to see you all there!
>

On the slim chance that this is useful to someone else:

Driving With Fergus is playing in Downtown Oakland from Noon-2pm today.

There will be irish dancing!

I don't exactly remember what the plaza is called, but it's where 12th st. dead ends into Broadway (and the BART station), upstairs in the plaza.

Dancing on cement, so bring your sneakers, but leave soft-soled (leather) shoes at home!

Hope to see you there!

It's more relaxed than Mondays, but still lots of fun.
I'll be there tonight, and if a couple other dancers show up, we'll have enough to dance through some 4-hands.

This Monday, Martin Luther King Day,
(or "Milky Way Day" if you're familiar with the Berkeley street)
the 17th of January, the first Monday I don't have to be at work in the new year is PLAID PLOUGH MONDAY!

Wear as much clashing Plaid as possible (for an easy reference, just see Anthony in a Dickens Fair photo).

Ladies*, this is your excuse to wear that short plaid schoolgirl skirt in freezing rainy January weather!

*Bob and Quinn not included. But don't say I didn't warn you.

Dance Sampler

I am in the final stages of starting a Dance Sampler in February or March. The Dance Sampler is a one day, Saturday dance festival of 40 introductory dance classes, with 8 hours of classes in 5 tracks:
Swing, Latin, Ballroom, Vintage, International/folk.

Location will probably be in Oakland.

The reason for posting to the irish plough people is that one of the classes is irish ceilie dancing.

Proposed dance classes are East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Lindy, Balboa, Shag, Charleston, Salsa, Cha Cha, Merengue, Paso Doble, American Tango, rumba, cumbia, foxtrot, American Tango, Viennese Waltz, rotary waltz, cross step waltz, schottische, mazurka, polka, renaissance, one step, irish ceilie, Irish set dancing, scottish country, contra, balkan folk, country and western, square dancing, cajun, zydeco. I expect many of the best BAy area social dance instructors to participate. Cost would be about $40.

In case you haven't heard yet, someone stole a bunch of stuff from my car parked near the Plough Monday night.

They didn't break out a window or cause any other obvious damage, but they did steal:

handbag/wallet/ID/credit cards/cash
computer/computer bag/binder-organizer
mobile phone
financial calculator
music CDs

Please be careful in the neighborhood of the Plough and leave your valuables at home.

Hi all,

I heard about you some time ago, but couldn't remember what day the Scottish dancing is. Berkeley is a bit of a drive so I want to make sure I get there on the right day. Can anyone tell me ....

**Where is the Plough?
**What days is the Scottish dance?
**<shudder> Where one learns this sort of dance?

Thanks!
M

Someone suggested it elsewhere, and because it didn't exist, I didn't see a reason not to do so.

Insert obligatory "Coq-head" joke here.

How about last night, eh? You couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting some excited beginner (and no, I didn't try). They made hay, did that bonfire thingy, and all gave the nice barlady a wave. But will any of them come back next week?

Who can say.....?

I just want to make sure I've got this right.

Next Monday is Plough Monday - when Berkeley Morris invades.

The following Monday then becomes Plaid Monday - where plaid is optional, but highly encouraged.

If I'm wrong, let me know. If I'm right, remind people as necessary.

What do folks think of the newish format at the Plough these days: i.e., more singing during the band's break, the dance performances, etc.?
