The Plough Petition
I will be going to the Starry Plough on Monday evening to talk with the owners (Eileen and/or Francis) and John about John's recent behavior.
I intend to inform them of the situation as best I can, and request that John apologize to those he directly offended or simply walk away from the Starry Plough for awhile.
Personally, I have no interest in returning to the Starry Plough to dance after what has happened if he does not agree to either of the above requests. This saddens me more than I can say. I have been coming to the Starry Plough to dance on Monday nights since Teddi Banks first brought me in 1998. Thank you Teddi. I've been regarded as a "regular" ever since (not counting the 3 years I lived in LA).
If you've danced or played at the Starry Plough, yet have no idea what I'm talking about, please see these two LiveJournal posts, made by Ammy & Rachel, respectively. Each of them have been going to the Starry Plough for well over 10 years.

This is cross-posted on my LiveJournal (edge-of-within.livejournal.com), the Plough People Tribe, and the Starry Plough mailing list.
I strongly encourage you to pass on this information, and link back to any of the above sources, since I'm sure I'm not reaching everyone who goes or has gone to the Starry Plough.
If you have danced or played at the Starry Plough on Monday nights, and would like to show your support AGAINST John's actions last Monday at the Starry Plough, please Reply to this post with your name.
If you would like, you can include the dates you came to Plough, and your reason for leaving (if any), though it's not necessary.
If you are leaving or have left the Plough because of John Slaymaker, please indicate as much if you are comfortable doing so.
It is totally fine to sign the petition if you strongly disagree with John's actions, yet still want to attend Monday nights at the Plough. No one will hold that against you, and signing the petition will not be held against you by anyone at the Starry Plough.
Please do not use this post for any conversations on the topic. You can join the conversations already present in the above LJ posts, or email/message me privately.
I will collect all the replies from the Tribe, mailing list, and my LJ and bring them with me on Monday.
If you would like to come with me on Monday, please include it in your reply.
There is no possible way I will be banned from the Plough for voicing my concern, and there is no possible way you will be banned from the Plough for "signing" this petition.
Thank you for your help and your time,
Sam Simmons

Re: The Plough Petition
Fri, May 4, 2007 - 9:00 AMSo, I'm not active at the Plough anymore so my opinion probably isn't worth much. I'm going to give it anyway because I am friendly like that.
I stopped coming to the Plough because my goals and the goals that were being stated by those in charge have very little in common. I went to the Plough to be social and physically active in a fun way with neat people. What I got was a lot of people bitching at me and putting me down because I wasn't being "traditional" enough and I wasn't trying hard enough to be a performance dancer. Uhm, I came to a dance night at a pub, not a dance studio. I fully recognize that I wasn't ever to a level where I was performance ready--but uh... I never wanted to be. I felt bullied and put down so I stopped going.
I never actually got any of that from John though. It was teachers in the intermediate class I had a problem with. Even when I stated very clearly that I didn't care if my foot work was perfect because I wasn't there to learn that I was still constantly criticisized. I'm not saying that what they did was inherently wrong or bad, just that it was not in any way what I wanted. I think that if the Plough is trying to teach people to be performance dancers they should change how they advertise. -
